About Poverty

Poverty is a big topic of the discussion. As there are many people there are even more opinios how to deal with the poverty and what startegy to do. However there are far less people who are actually doing something to solve those issues.

Several days ago with friends we had a discussion about the poverty in many undeveloped countries in Africa, Asia and South America, and actually some of the comments and point of views shoked me. The statement that the poverty in various regions are their own problem just left me speachless. How one can be so ignorant to say this. A friend of my kept on saying that the aid that is comming from number of organisations and individuals will not do any help, just harm the countries that the people will never learn to become entrepreneur and use the aid wisely, instead of that they just use it with no thinking of tomorrow and wait till another truck of good will be brough to them.

Maybe this can be a case in some times, but no way this is done on purpose, no way people do not think how to survive at the best. The envitroment itself force them to act like this as if there is no tomorrow, in fact for many of them there is no tomorrow. (About 25,000 people die every day of hunger or hunger-related causes, according to the United Nations. This is one person every three and a half seconds. Unfortunately, it is children who die most often).

My dear friend if you say that you cannot help those dieing people far away in rural China so at least do something to help your own country. Somehow poverty in Lithuania is not such a big topic as the parlament elections so you most likely never heard of some facts. I did small research and found some facts about poverty in our own country:

  • 18% of lithuanians live in povery
  • 1 out of 3 village people live in poverty
  • almouts every third pentioner live in poverty
  • over 140 000 children live in poverty
  • there are 90 000 jobless people
  • the most poor person has 2341 Lt a year, which is 195 Lt a month and 6.5 Lt a day!

Those numbers are of a country which is a member of European Union, there are startegies how to solve those problems, how effective they are we will see and experience latter I suppose. And those are the numbers we are usually not aware of. So if you don't believe you can save the world, at least think of helping your neighbour and help your country. Maybe little by little we can save the whole world.
